1940s thematic activity
The 1940s thematic activity is a model application for editing, curating and indexing the metadata of digitized and digital-born collections and documents related to the 1940s in Greece, and for making them available in a common search platform.
It aims to contribute to the enhancement of digital research in the arts and humanities and to the development of tools, services and good practices, in coordination with other similar projects and initiatives developed in recent years. Moreover, it aims to provide an archival research environment for the history of a particularly charged period that figures prominently in the transformations of perceptions of the past and in public discourse in Greece.
To develop the platform, the infrastructure relied on material from collections provided by the following six historical archives and memory organizations, whose documents illuminate different aspects of the events of the 1940s:
Academy of Athens
School of Fine Arts
Contemporary Social History Archives (ASKI)
Army History Directorate
Jewish Museum of Greece
Historical Archive of the National Kapodistrian University of Athens
The organizations retain the exclusive access rights to the primary material, while allowing the infrastructure to process and index it, and to display the metadata and a set of comprehensive subject indexes.
